New rifle?

Ok, maybe not new, a 20 year old at least Ruger 77 made before Ruger went to the bolt mounted safety this one has a shotgun style safety;
 The rifle has a couple of minor marks on the stock but nothing that wont clean up if I was that way inclined. It doesn't have a great scope, a Leupold M8 6X42 of the same vintage. I don't think looking down the bore its seen much action and I am almost reluctant to have it screw cut for moderating!

 All in all not a bad little and very pointable .308 which will suit nicely for a stalking starter rifle.

I may just have the patch of ground to try it out on soon, as for that 7x57, the scope mount bases weren't aligned properly, I will look at a single piece mount for that instead.

Rugers have just about the worst triggers imaginable and the old Mk1 M77's with the tang safeties are about as bad as they come.
Timney make an after sales replacement if you can get the safety to function 100%. Not as easy as its sound and may require a change of spring.

I have heard that and tales of notorious groups wandering but then I've seen and shot worse and for a 20 year old rifle its been cared for by its previous owner so it may not be breaking glass rods but it will do!

In .308, if I could get that past Customs, I'd have it like a shot and bugger the trigger. Like anything in the bush, you just get used to it. It's a damn good rifle.

30-06 is a good calibre to have here as well by the way. It used to be the machine gun round for the Harvard aircraft the Portuguese had here before independence and there's still boxfuls in various stores that one can, ahem, acquire. In Belize I had a Remington 700 BDL in 30-06 and had no complaints whatsoever.
